Convert PROJECT to another file type
To convert PROJECT Projects to another format, you need Eclipse or other Developer software.
Convert a file to PROJECT
To convert other file formats to the "Project Settings & Metadata" file type, you need software like Eclipse or a similar tool.
About PROJECT files
The .project file extension is a highly overloaded format used by multiple software applications to store configuration, metadata, and asset references for a specific project. Most commonly, it is an XML-based settings file used by the Eclipse integrated development environment (IDE) or the Defold game engine. It is also heavily used in industrial automation as a compressed ZIP archive containing PLC programming data for the CODESYS development environment and EcoStruxure Machine Expert. Additionally, Apple uses this extension for Final Cut Pro and Xcode projects, formatting the internal data as a plist.
The main disadvantage of .project files is their extreme lack of standardization. Because the extension is entirely generic, you cannot know what software created the file just by looking at its name. An Eclipse file is lightweight text, while a CODESYS file is a heavy binary or archive containing industrial logic. Without the original software, these files are practically useless. They are proprietary, lock you into specific IDEs or expensive PLC software licenses, and contain complex dependency chains that break if moved incorrectly. Furthermore, standard web browsers and document viewers cannot read them natively.
To view the internal data, you must often convert the file to XML, TXT, or extract the contents if it is a ZIP file. Because this file format is so difficult to open and highly dependent on its parent application, standard converters fail to process it. Often, only the original software can properly compile or export the actual project data. We inspect the file header to identify the creator. If our analysis detects an underlying XML, plist, or ZIP format, viewing the text or extracting embedded assets may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PROJECT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PROJECT file to PDF, PPT, EXE, ISO, BIN, CUE, PAK, WAD, PK3, PK4, BSP or MAP, you can use Eclipse or similar software from the "Development Project Configuration File" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MOD, BIN, CFG, SCX, DAT, MPQ, LOG, CUE, INI, EXE, SCM or ISO files to PROJECT, try Eclipse or another comparable tool in the "Development Project Configuration File" category.
The PROJECT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PROJECT converter.
