An .MSP file is primarily a Windows Installer Patch file. It contains updates, bug fixes, or security patches for applications installed via a Microsoft Software Installation (MSI) package. The file utilizes the Microsoft Compound format to bundle internal CAB archives and metadata instructions. Secondarily, the .MSP extension represents legacy 1-bit monochrome bitmap images created by early versions of Microsoft Paint, or mass spectrometry data files used by the NIST Mass Spectral Library.
The primary disadvantage of Windows Installer .MSP files is their opacity. They are proprietary, executable-like containers that do not natively allow users to inspect their contents without installation. If you want to extract the updated files bundled inside without actually applying the patch, you must use command-line parameters or specialized database tools like Orca. Legacy image .MSP files face a different problem: they are entirely obsolete. Modern web browsers, mobile devices, and most image viewers cannot decode them. NIST mass spectral data is heavily siloed into scientific software like MZmine 2.
To bypass these limitations, extraction and conversion are necessary. For software patches, extracting the contents to CAB or raw directories allows for inspection and administrative deployments. For legacy images, you must convert to PNG or WebP for web display, or JPG for broad sharing. Archiving is best done in .PDF/A.
