About MSP files
The .MSP file extension primarily represents a Windows Installer Patch, a distinct system file used to update applications previously installed via MSI (Windows Installer) packages. Unlike full installers, these files contain only the "binary differential" - the specific bits of code that have changed - making them efficient for distributing updates but notoriously difficult to inspect or edit directly. Because they rely on the original installation context (GUIDs and registry keys), you cannot simply "open" a patch file to see the software inside without command-line tools like msiexec or extraction utilities like 7-Zip.
However, .MSP is also a legacy extension for Microsoft Paint bitmaps (often monochrome 1-bit images) and NIST Mass Spectral Library data files used in chemistry. If you are stuck with a legacy MSP image, it likely won't display in modern web browsers or photo viewers. The most practical solution is converting these archaic bitmaps to PNG or JPG for universal compatibility. For Mass Spec data, researchers often need to convert proprietary MSP libraries into open formats like .mzML or mgf for cross-platform analysis in tools like MZmine.

The MSP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MSP converter.
