About MPS files

The .MPS file extension represents a diverse set of legacy and specialized formats, creating a common point of confusion for users. Most frequently, it denotes a Garmin MapSource file, a legacy format used to store GPS waypoints, routes, and tracks created in older versions of Garmin software. These files are proprietary and often incompatible with modern GPS units or web-based tools like Google Earth, requiring conversion to the universal GPX or KML standards for broad accessibility.

In scientific and academic circles, .MPS refers to the Mathematical Programming System format, an industry-standard ASCII text format developed by IBM for defining linear programming (LP) problems. While widely supported by solvers like MATLAB and Gurobi, the format's rigid, fixed-column text layout makes it difficult for humans to read or edit manually without introducing syntax errors. Users often need to convert these to clearer text formats or spreadsheets.

Less commonly, an MPS file may be an MPEG-1 System Stream video (similar to MPG), which modern media players may fail to recognize without a conversion to MP4 or MKV.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MPS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MPR, MPP, MP4, ISO, MTS, M4A, MP3, DAT, PDF, TXT, EXE, JPG and CRDOWNLOAD files.

The MPS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MPS converter.
