About MPS files

The .MPS file extension primarily represents a Garmin MapSource waypoint and route file, but is also frequently used for WOLF RPG Editor map data, IBM Mathematical Programming System files, and MPEG Program Stream videos. Garmin used .MPS as its default format before adopting the universal GPX standard. This legacy format is highly problematic today: it is strictly proprietary, cannot be opened natively on modern smartphones or web browsers, and is entirely ignored by modern web-mapping applications like Google Maps. Users also frequently encounter .MPS as outdated video files that lack HTML5 playback support.

To make this data useful, conversion is strictly required. For GPS data, you should convert .MPS to GPX or KML to preserve waypoints, tracks, and routes for use in modern navigation tools. Video files should be converted to MP4 for universal device compatibility. Linear programming .MPS files are ASCII-based and can be migrated to newer formats like LP.

Because the Garmin .MPS format is closed and tied to obsolete software like Garmin MapSource, standard online converters frequently fail to parse its binary structure. Often, only the original software or specialized tools like GPSBabel can properly read or export the data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MPS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MPR, MPP, MP4, ISO, MTS, M4A, MP3, DAT, PDF, TXT, EXE, JPG and CRDOWNLOAD files.

The MPS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MPS converter.
