About MED files
The .MED extension is a notorious "chameleon" format, serving three distinct and incompatible user groups, which often leads to confusion. Most commonly, it acts as a Mobile Backup created by MOBILedit, containing contacts, messages, and photos in a proprietary Microsoft Compound structure. These archives are designed for restoration rather than access, making it difficult to extract individual files without the paid software.
Secondly, in the engineering sector, .MED refers to MED-file (Modélisation et Échanges de Données), a standard based on HDF5 used by the SALOME platform and Code_Aster for numerical simulation meshes. These files can be massive and require specialized scientific tools to view. Users often need to convert these to VTK or UNV to use the geometry in other solvers like OpenFOAM or ANSYS.
Finally, retro enthusiasts encounter .MED as Music Modules created by OctaMED or MED Soundstudio on the Amiga. These are tracker files containing synthesized audio patterns. Modern media players cannot open them natively, necessitating conversion to MP3 or WAV for listening. Whether you need to recover phone data, migrate a 3D mesh, or archive vintage audio, convert.guru helps you identify the format and convert it correctly.

The MED Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MED converter.
