The .med file extension is a highly overloaded format used by entirely unrelated software systems. Depending on its exact origin, a .med file could be a mobile phone backup created by MOBILedit, a numerical simulation mesh from the open-source SALOME platform, a 3D medical scan archive from Medit software, or a retro music tracker module from the Amiga OctaMED scene.
Because developers continually recycle the "med" (medical, medium, media) extension, operating systems cannot reliably open these files. Double-clicking a .med file usually results in an error or launches the wrong application. Furthermore, many of these formats are proprietary: phone backups use specialized Microsoft Compound architectures, while medical 3D scans are often encrypted ZIP archives. Legacy audio formats like OctaMED require obscure, outdated tracker software that no longer runs on modern machines.
To actually use the data trapped in a .med file, conversion is strictly necessary. For retro tracker music, convert the file to standard WAV or MP3 formats for cross-platform playback. For scientific SALOME data (which relies on the HDF5 structure), extract the mesh points to CSV or TXT to analyze them in standard spreadsheet software. For 3D medical scans, exporting to OBJ or STL allows viewing in modern 3D software.
