About MOD files
The .mod file extension is one of the most fragmented formats in computing. For general users, it usually represents an obsolete, standard-definition MPEG-2 video file recorded by vintage tapeless camcorders (like the JVC Everio, Canon, or Panasonic models) or a classic tracker music module originating from the Amiga system. For developers and gamers, it can also act as a Go module definition, a GRUB bootloader file, or a game modification descriptor for titles published by Paradox Interactive.
Video .mod files are bulky and problematic. While they use standard MPEG-2 compression, they frequently lack proper header metadata. This causes modern media players and video editing software to play them without audio, or to display them with a distorted aspect ratio (squashing 16:9 widescreen footage into a 4:3 square). Audio .mod files present different challenges; they contain both raw instrument samples and sequence data, meaning standard music players on mobile phones or web browsers simply cannot open them without dedicated plugins.
To modernize these files and make them usable, conversion is highly recommended. For video .mod files, convert to MP4 (H.264) for maximum compatibility across web browsers, smartphones, and smart TVs. Convert to MOV if you are importing the footage into Apple-based editing workflows like Final Cut Pro. If you have an audio .mod tracker file, convert it to MP3 for standard listening, or WAV if you need lossless audio for remixing. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The MOD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MOD converter.
