About RLV files

The .RLV file format typically serves one of several distinct, mostly proprietary functions. Primarily, it stores a Google Motion Photo video fragment inside a JFIF image container, or it holds a low-resolution cached DJI Drone Live View video generated by the DJI GO 4 app. Less commonly, .RLV files contain UTF-16 (LE) data readouts from Sontex heat cost allocators, log files from ABACOM RealView, or specialized cycling simulation videos for Tacx indoor trainers.

These files are notoriously frustrating to handle. For DJI drone pilots, .RLV files are just temporary video caches dumped onto a smartphone. They are highly compressed, lack the full 4K resolution recorded by the drone's SD card, and are not natively recognized by standard desktop media players. For Google and Ricoh camera users, the motion video is embedded deep within standard image structures, requiring specialized apps to split the animation from the still photo.

Because .RLV files use non-standard extensions to hide underlying data streams (like H.264 video or raw text), standard online converters fail to process them. Converting an .RLV video cache to standard MP4 or AVI, or extracting the JPG frame, is the only way to share these files easily across devices. Remember that converting a DJI drone cache will not restore the missing high-definition data - it only makes the low-resolution preview playable.

Since this file format is difficult to open or convert due to its multiple conflicting uses, identifying the exact sub-type is critical. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format like an MP4 video stream or UTF-16 text data, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RLV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The RLV Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RLV converter.
