About IVR files

The .IVR extension is primarily associated with Internet Video Recording files created by RealPlayer. Introduced in RealPlayer 11, this format is generated when a user utilizes the software's "Download This Video" or "Record" feature to capture streaming content from the web.

Because .IVR is a proprietary container designed specifically for the RealNetworks ecosystem, it presents significant playback challenges today. These files are effectively "locked" inside the RealPlayer environment; standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player often cannot open them without specific, outdated codecs. Users frequently encounter these files when recovering old backups of recorded streams, only to find them unplayable on modern smartphones or smart TVs.

Best Conversion Targets:

*Note: A small percentage of .ivr files may be VRML panoramic scenes used by Bentley Systems MicroStation. These are 3D engineering files, not video.*
