About INSV files
The .INSV file is a proprietary video format created by Insta360 cameras to capture unstitched 360-degree footage. These files contain raw data from multiple camera lenses, along with internal gyroscope and stabilization metadata. Users typically open them with Insta360 Studio on desktop or the Insta360 mobile app. Under the hood, the file structure relies on standard MP4 containers, which is why software like QuickTime Player can sometimes read them if the extension is altered. The main disadvantage of the .INSV format is its lack of universal compatibility. Standard web browsers, social media platforms, and most video editors cannot process the dual-lens data natively. This means you cannot upload an .INSV file directly to YouTube or Instagram. Furthermore, the files are extremely large and consume significant disk space. You must stitch and export the video before it becomes usable outside the Insta360 ecosystem. To make these videos shareable and editable, conversion is required. For web uploads and universal playback, convert to MP4 with H.264 or H.265 encoding. For professional editing in software like Adobe Premiere, convert to high-bitrate MOV or ProRes.
