INSV files are a proprietary video format generated by Insta360 cameras, such as the ONE X series, GO, and RS models. These files encapsulate raw, high-resolution panoramic footage captured through dual-lens systems. While technically based on the MPEG-4 ISO Base Media standard, .INSV files are not ready for immediate consumption on standard media players or social platforms.
To the frustration of many users, attempting to open an .INSV file directly in software like VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player often results in an error or displays two distorted circular "fisheye" feeds rather than a seamless 360-degree view. This occurs because the raw footage has not yet been "stitched" - the process of merging the two camera angles into a flat, equirectangular projection. To make the footage usable for editing in Adobe Premiere Pro or viewing on the web, users must convert .INSV files to widely supported formats.
