About THM files
A .thm file is primarily a thumbnail image automatically generated by digital video recorders, including Canon cameras, GoPro devices, and various camcorders. Its purpose is to display a static preview of a video clip in the device's playback menu. While functionally identical to a standard JPEG image, the specific .thm extension prevents most operating systems from automatically opening it with default photo viewers. Users often find these files cluttering their SD cards alongside video files (like MP4, MTS, or MOV), leading to confusion about their purpose. Because they are typically low-resolution (often 160x120 pixels), they are poor candidates for printing but excellent for cataloging. A secondary, legacy use case involves Sony Ericsson mobile phones, where the format acts as a theme archive containing interface assets. For the vast majority of users, the best solution is converting these thumbnails to JPG or PNG to make them viewable on standard devices, or to PDF for generating contact sheets of video content.
Convert.Guru analyzes your THM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The THM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our THM converter.
