About LRF files

The .LRF extension represents two distinct file types that often cause confusion due to their incompatibility with standard software.

1. DJI Low-Resolution Video Proxy (Most Common)

Generated automatically by DJI drones (such as the Mavic, Mini, and Air series), these files are lower-quality (usually 720p) video proxies recorded alongside high-resolution MP4 or MOV footage. Their primary purpose is to allow smooth playback and previewing within the DJI Fly app on mobile devices, as processing 4K footage wirelessly is resource-intensive.

The Problem:
Users frequently discover these files cluttering SD cards. Because standard media players like Windows Media Player do not recognize the .LRF extension, they appear as unopenable corrupt files. While they are essentially standard MPEG-4 video streams, the proprietary extension creates artificial friction.

The Solution:
For immediate viewing, these files can often simply be renamed from .lrf to mp4. However, to ensure proper metadata handling and universal compatibility without manual file management, users should convert them to standard MP4 or HEVC formats.

2. Sony BroadBand eBook (Legacy)

Before the standardization of EPUB, Sony utilized the proprietary LRF format for its PRS-500 and PRS-600 e-readers. This consists of the BroadBand eBook (BBeB) binary data.

The Problem:
This format is obsolete. Modern devices like the Amazon Kindle or Kobo cannot open .LRF files. Users with old digital libraries find their purchased books locked in a "dead" format that modern e-reader apps generally refuse to parse.

The Solution:
To salvage these books, they must be converted. For reading on modern tablets or phones, convert to EPUB. For archiving or printing, convert to PDF. For Kindle devices, convert to MOBI or AZW3. Calibre is a common desktop tool for this, or you can use an online converter for quick results.

The LRF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LRF converter.
