About LRF files
A .LRF file typically serves one of two completely distinct purposes: a low-resolution video proxy from a DJI drone or an obsolete BroadBand eBook file from Sony. When generated by a DJI drone camera, the .LRF (Low-Resolution File) is created alongside the main, high-quality MP4 or MOV recording. Its primary use is to enable quick playback and lightweight editing within the DJI Fly app without choking the mobile device's processor with massive 4K files. The biggest disadvantage of this format is that standard desktop media players and professional NLEs (Non-Linear Editors) often fail to recognize the .LRF extension, causing workflow interruptions. Fortunately, a DJI .LRF file is structurally just an MP4 file in disguise. The secondary use case is the Sony Portable Reader file, part of the defunct BroadBand eBook (BBeB) format. These files are highly problematic today. They are entirely proprietary, lack support on modern devices like Amazon Kindle, and often contain restrictive DRM (Digital Rights Management). You cannot natively open these files in modern web browsers or standard document viewers. To overcome these limitations, conversion is mandatory. For DJI files, simply renaming the extension to MP4 usually works, or you can convert them to standard MP4 for broader web compatibility. For Sony eBooks, converting them to EPUB (for modern readers) or .PDF/A (for long-term archiving) is the only way to rescue the content.
