About LIT files

The Problem: You have a digital book locked inside a dead format. The .LIT extension was used by Microsoft Reader, an ebook platform that was completely discontinued in 2012. Because Microsoft shut down the activation servers and removed the software from distribution, these files are effectively "orphaned." They are based on compiled HTML (similar to CHM help files) but are often encrypted with proprietary DRM (Digital Rights Management), making them unreadable on modern devices like iPads, Android tablets, or Kindle ereaders.

The Solution: To read these books today, you must convert them.

Note: If your file is DRM-protected, simple online conversion may fail. In these cases, you may need desktop tools like Calibre with specific plugins to strip the protection before conversion.

The LIT Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LIT converter.
