The .ART file extension serves multiple distinct purposes depending on its origin. Most commonly, it represents a PCB artwork layer file generated by electronic design automation (EDA) software like DipTrace in the standard Gerber format (RS-274X). These files contain 2D vector data used by photoplotters to manufacture printed circuit boards. Alternatively, .ART is heavily utilized as a proprietary 3D model project file by Autodesk ArtCAM (originally Delcam), primarily for CNC machining, woodworking, and 3D relief engraving. Historically, .ART was also notorious as the AOL compressed image file, a heavily compressed raster format created by Johnson-Grace for 1990s dial-up internet users.
The primary disadvantage of the .ART format is its extreme fragmentation and lack of interoperability. Because the extension is overloaded, operating systems frequently fail to assign the correct default program. If you possess an ArtCAM model, it is locked into a discontinued Autodesk ecosystem, making it exceptionally difficult to open without legacy software. The AOL image format is entirely obsolete and unsupported by modern web browsers or image editors. Even PCB artwork files require specialized Gerber viewers to inspect, preventing quick communication with non-engineers.

For PCB artwork, convert to PDF for easy sharing, archiving, and printing, or export to standard GBR (Gerber) if your fabrication house relies on strict extension naming conventions.
