About ART files
The .ART file extension is highly fragmented and notoriously frustrating to handle because it is shared across completely unrelated software programs. Most commonly, it functions as a PCB artwork layer file formatted as Gerber RS-274X, storing printed circuit board manufacturing data. Another major use case is for 3D model projects created in Autodesk ArtCAM (formerly Delcam), utilizing the Microsoft Compound file format. Historically, the extension was also used for highly compressed AOL images developed by Johnson-Grace for dial-up connections, as well as Android Runtime compiled images. Opening a .ART file depends entirely on its origin. PCB files require EDA software like DipTrace. ArtCAM was officially discontinued by Autodesk in 2018, making modern support practically nonexistent without legacy licenses. The legacy AOL image format is entirely unsupported by modern web browsers and standard image viewers. Users need to convert these files to escape vendor lock-in and overcome software obsolescence. The ArtCAM proprietary format locks 3D relief data behind expensive, discontinued software. AOL images are unusable on the modern web. For 3D machining and editing, convert ArtCAM .ART files to .STL or .OBJ. For PCB manufacturing, standardizing to a universal .GBR (Gerber) extension prevents confusion at the fabrication plant.
