Convert ZLIB to another file type
To convert ZLIB compressed files to another format, you need zlib or other Compressed software.
Convert a file to ZLIB
To convert other file formats to the "Compressed Data Stream" file type, you need software like zlib or a similar tool.
About ZLIB files
The .zlib file is a raw compressed data stream created using the zlib compression library, which employs the DEFLATE algorithm. Unlike standard archive formats like ZIP or GZ, a .zlib file is typically not meant for direct user interaction. It usually acts as an internal data block embedded within other file formats, such as Portable Network Graphics (PNG) or Git repositories, to reduce file size. You can interact with it using command-line tools like OpenSSL or customized scripts using the zlib library.
The primary disadvantage of the .zlib format is its lack of built-in file metadata. Because it is a raw data stream, it does not store original filenames, directory structures, or file attributes. Standard desktop archive tools like WinRAR or 7-Zip often fail to recognize or open standalone .zlib files out of the box, leaving users unable to access the underlying data without programming knowledge. This makes sharing or archiving files in a raw .zlib format highly impractical for average users.
To make the data accessible, you must decompress or convert the file into a standardized format. For general archiving and sharing, convert the data to ZIP or 7Z. If you are working in a Unix/Linux environment, converting to GZ (Gzip) is highly recommended.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ZLIB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ZLIB file to PDF, EPUB, GZIP, ZIP, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI or CFG, you can use zlib or similar software from the "Data Stream Compression" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to ZLIB, try zlib or another comparable tool in the "Data Stream Compression" category.
The ZLIB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ZLIB converter.
