These files efficiently store indexed color palettes, bitplane image data, and occasionally animation sequences used heavily in vintage video game design during the 1980s and 1990s.
Today, the .LBM format is entirely obsolete. Modern operating systems like Windows and macOS do not natively support it, and no standard web browser can display these images. Opening an .LBM file locally requires downloading specialized retro emulators or robust legacy image converters like XnView. Additionally, Mac users might notice .LBM files appearing in Apple Logic Pro project folders; in that specific audio software context, they are merely temporary waveform cache files rather than usable images or playable audio tracks.
