About IFF files

The .iff extension represents several fragmented file formats, making it notoriously difficult to manage without context. Originally, it acts as an Interchange File Format container created by Electronic Arts and Commodore Amiga in 1985 to store audio, images, and video files. Today, the extension is heavily utilized as proprietary game asset archives (often functioning as standard ZIP containers) for the NBA 2K series by 2K Sports, and as resource files for classic games like The Sims by Maxis.

Legacy .iff files require emulation or specialized viewers like IrfanView to open. Modern NBA 2K .iff files require community modding tools like NBA 2K Explorer. The major disadvantage of the .iff format is its disjointed nature. It is completely unsupported by web browsers, and standard operating systems cannot preview the contents. Proprietary game data files lock 3D assets and textures away from standard editing tools, requiring manual extraction.
