About ILBM files

The .ILBM (InterLeaved BitMap) file is a raster graphic format developed as part of the IFF (Interchange File Format) standard by Electronic Arts and Commodore in 1985. It was the primary image format for the Amiga computer ecosystem, heavily utilized by painting software like Deluxe Paint. Unlike modern formats that store pixel data contiguously, .ILBM stores data as separate bitplanes to match the Amiga custom chipset architecture.

Today, the .ILBM format is completely obsolete. Modern operating systems like Windows and macOS, as well as modern web browsers and mobile devices, do not natively support it. You cannot open, view, or share these files directly. Trying to open an .ILBM file usually results in an error unless you install specialized retro-computing viewers or Amiga emulators.

To make these historical files usable today, conversion is mandatory. For modern web use and perfect pixel archiving, convert to PNG. If you need the smallest file size for sharing, convert to JPG.
