The .ILBM (Interleaved Bitmap) file is a raster graphic format primarily associated with the Commodore Amiga personal computers of the 1980s and 90s. Based on the generic IFF (Interchange File Format) container standard developed by Electronic Arts, ILBM files store image data using "bitplanes" rather than the packed pixel format used by modern computers. While this was highly efficient for the Amiga's custom chipset (OCS/ECS/AGA), it is a main issue today: standard image viewers on Windows or macOS cannot interpret the interleaved data structure, and modern GPUs do not support planar rendering natively.
Users typically encounter these files when recovering retro digital art, game assets, or projects created in classic software like Deluxe Paint. Beyond just opening the file, a major challenge is the aspect ratio; Amiga pixels were often rectangular (meant for CRT televisions), meaning an ILBM displayed on a modern square-pixel monitor will look vertically squashed or horizontally stretched unless corrected during conversion. To preserve the sharp edges of pixel art, converting to PNG or GIF is the best strategy.
