About PCX files
The .PCX file is a legacy raster image format originally developed by ZSoft Corporation for PC Paintbrush, one of the first graphics editing programs for MS-DOS. Once a pervasive standard for digital imaging on DOS and early Windows systems, .PCX uses Run-Length Encoding (RLE) lossless compression. While it supports 24-bit color, the format has largely fallen out of use due to inefficiency compared to modern standards.
Handling .PCX files today presents significant friction. Because it is an obsolete format, standard web browsers and many modern mobile image viewers cannot display .PCX images directly. The RLE compression is often less efficient than PNG or LZW, resulting in larger file sizes for complex images. Furthermore, finding software to edit these files without encountering compatibility errors or color palette issues can be difficult. For modern workflows, users should convert .PCX files to PNG for lossless archiving and editing, or JPG and WebP for efficient web display and sharing. Just drag and drop to determine the format, view, and convert it instantly.

The PCX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PCX converter.
