About KRA files
The .kra file is the native document format for Krita, a popular open-source digital painting application. Under the hood, a .kra file is a ZIP archive containing a flattened preview image, XML configuration files, and individual layer data.
Because it retains all non-destructive editing capabilities - like raster layers, vector shapes, masks, and specific color spaces - these files often exceed 100MB and consume significant system memory. The main disadvantage of the .kra format is its strict lack of portability. You cannot open it natively in web browsers, Windows Photo Viewer, or Apple Preview. Professional industry tools like Adobe Photoshop or CorelDRAW do not support it without third-party plugins. Sending a .kra file to clients or collaborators who do not have Krita installed will guarantee access errors.
To share or publish your artwork, you must convert the file. For web use and social media, convert to PNG or WEBP. For professional printing or archiving, convert to TIFF. If you need to collaborate with users on other painting software, convert to PSD (Photoshop Document) or ORA (OpenRaster). Note that converting to flattened formats like PNG will permanently merge your layers.
