About ORA files

The .ORA extension represents two distinct file types that create significant compatibility challenges. The most common convertible format is the OpenRaster image file, an open interchange format designed to save layered raster graphics. While excellent for cross-compatibility between open-source tools like Krita and GIMP, .ORA files are essentially ZIP archives containing a stack.xml file and image data. The primary disadvantage is the lack of native support in industry-standard software like Adobe Photoshop or standard operating system viewers, effectively locking your multi-layered artwork behind specific software installations. To collaborate with users of proprietary software, you should convert OpenRaster files to PSD (to retain layers) or flattened formats like PNG or JPG for web publishing.

The second common type is an Oracle Database configuration file (e.g., init.ora or tnsnames.ora). These are critical plain text files storing network parameters and database initialization settings. While editable, they often lack a default file association in Windows or macOS, leading to errors when double-clicking. For documentation, archiving, or easy viewing without risking accidental edits to database parameters, converting these text-based .ORA files to PDF or TXT is the recommended workflow.

The ORA Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ORA converter.
