About ORA files
A .ORA file typically serves one of two completely distinct purposes. It is either an OpenRaster image file used for exchanging layered graphics between open-source digital painting applications like Krita and GIMP, or it is a critical configuration file used by Oracle Database environments (such as tnsnames.ora or sqlnet.ora).
OpenRaster files are essentially ZIP archives containing XML data and multiple PNG image layers. While excellent for preserving non-destructive edits outside the Adobe ecosystem, the .ORA format is severely limited in mainstream support. Native image viewers in Windows or macOS cannot open them, and standard web browsers block them entirely. This makes sharing artwork with clients or non-technical users practically impossible without conversion.
Conversely, Oracle .ORA files store network routing information, server parameters, or database passwords. While most of these are basic plain-text files, end-users often struggle to access them because operating systems lack a default program association for the .ORA extension.
For OpenRaster images intended for professional editing, convert to PSD to maintain layer structure in Adobe Photoshop. For web use or instant sharing, flatten them to WebP, PNG, or JPG. For Oracle configuration files, convert them to TXT to easily read the connection strings in any text editor. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The ORA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ORA converter.
