About KRZ files
The .KRZ extension creates a unique challenge because it serves two completely different technical workflows: vintage audio synthesis and modern digital art.
First and foremost, it is the native format for Kurzweil Music Systems synthesizers, specifically the legendary K2000 and K2500 series. These files function as containers for programs, keymaps, and PCM sample data. The problem for modern producers is that .KRZ files are locked to obsolete hardware architecture. To use these classic sounds in a modern production environment, the data must be parsed and converted. For raw audio access, converting to WAV or AIFF is ideal. To preserve the instrument behavior (like envelopes and velocity layers), converting to SF2 (SoundFont) or Native Instruments Kontakt (nki) is the best path.
Secondarily, .KRZ is an optimized file type for Krita, the open-source digital painting application. Technically, a .KRZ file is a standard Krita document (KRA) that is ZIP-compressed and stripped of its internal preview.png to reduce file size. While this saves disk space, it creates significant friction: you cannot preview the artwork in Windows Explorer, macOS Finder, or on mobile devices. To share your work or view it outside of the Krita editor, you need to convert these archives into standard raster images like PNG, JPG, or WebP.
Convert.Guru analyzes your KRZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert KRZ file to MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC, APE or WV, you can use Kurzweil K2000 or similar software from the "Synthesizer Patch & Sample Container" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The KRZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KRZ converter.
