About KDF files
The .kdf extension represents a frustrating collision of modern digital publishing and legacy print workflows. Most users encounter this file in one of three distinct contexts, each requiring a different approach.
Amazon Kindle Create Project File: If you are an author, the .kdf (often found alongside a kcb file) is a working resource file - essentially an SQL database containing your book's formatting and edit history. You cannot upload this file to Amazon KDP. It is not a readable ebook. To publish or share your work, you must open the project in Kindle Create and use the "Export" function to generate a KPF (Kindle Package Format) or EPUB file.
Kinko's File Prep Tool Document: In the late 90s and early 2000s, this proprietary format was used by Kinko's (now FedEx Office) to bundle documents for professional printing. These files are "digital negatives" that are largely obsolete. They cannot be opened by modern PDF readers or word processors. Recovering the content typically requires locating the original layout file (e.g., DOC, QXD) or finding a legacy installation of the Kinko's File Prep Tool to print to PDF.
Kodak EasyShare Database: If found in a photo folder, this is a catalog index file used by the discontinued Kodak EasyShare software. It contains metadata (thumbnails, album organization) but does not contain your high-resolution photos. Your actual images are likely stored as JPG files in adjacent folders.
Convert.Guru analyzes your KDF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert KDF file to PDF, EPUB, TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX, MD or MARKDOWN, you can use Kindle Create or similar software from the "Kindle Project Resource" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to KDF, try Kindle Create or another comparable tool in the "Kindle Project Resource" category.
The KDF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KDF converter.
