To convert other file formats to the "Publishing Project File" file type, you need software like Kindle Create or a similar tool.
About KCB files
A .KCB file is a working project file created by Amazon Kindle Create, the tool authors use to format eBooks for Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).
It is vital to understand that the .KCB file is not the eBook itself; it is a JSON-based recipe file that stores your formatting, chapter breaks, and themes. It acts as a pointer to a Resources folder (usually named [Book Title].kcb-resources) which contains the actual text and images.
Common Friction Point: Users often mistake the .KCB for a publishable format or a readable eBook. You cannot upload a .KCB file to Amazon KDP, nor can you open it on a Kindle device or standard eBook reader. Furthermore, if you only have the .KCB file without its accompanying resources folder, the file is useless and will not open.
Best Conversion Practices:
For Publishing: You must open the project in Kindle Create and click Export to generate a KPF (Kindle Package Format) file.
For Editing/Recovery: If you lost your original manuscript, check the Resources folder associated with the .KCB file; it often contains a copy of the original DOCX file. There is no direct "Save as Word" feature in Kindle Create, so recovering text typically requires locating that source file or exporting to KPF and using third-party tools like Calibre to convert the output back to editable text.
Convert.Guru analyzes your KCB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert KCB file to PDF, KPF, EPUB, DOCX, INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML or YML, you can use Kindle Create or similar software from the "Kindle Book Project" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to KCB, try Kindle Create or another comparable tool in the "Kindle Book Project" category.
The KCB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KCB converter.
