About BZ2 files

A .BZ2 file is a compressed data stream generated by the open-source bzip2 utility, created by Julian Seward. It utilizes the Burrows-Wheeler Transform algorithm and Huffman coding to achieve compression ratios that generally surpass GZ (gzip), making it ideal for distributing large software packages or archiving heavy data streams on UNIX and Linux systems.

While highly efficient, .BZ2 files present specific challenges for general users. Unlike ZIP, the .BZ2 format is a pure compressor, not an archiver; it typically compresses only a single file. To bundle multiple files, it is almost exclusively combined with TAR, resulting in .TAR.BZ2 or TBZ2 archives. Furthermore, Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS do not natively support extracting pure .BZ2 files without third-party utilities like 7-Zip or WinRAR.
