About JPX files

The .jpx extension is a "container" that typically holds one of two very different things: a high-fidelity JPEG 2000 Extended image or a specialized project file (like MAGIX photo settings or Janome embroidery patterns).

If your file is an image, it is likely a JPEG 2000 Part 2 file. While superior to standard JPG files in quality - supporting layers, transparency, and different color spaces - .jpx files are notoriously difficult to use. Standard web browsers (Chrome, Edge), mobile phones, and even basic Windows photo viewers often cannot open them without third-party plugins. This proprietary lock-in makes sharing or publishing these images a headache.

Best Conversion Targets:

Note on Other Formats: If the file is tiny (measured in KB) and associated with MAGIX Photo Manager, it is likely a metadata sidecar file containing edit history, not the image itself. These cannot be converted to viewable images. Similarly, JBuilder files are text-based XML project files.

The JPX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JPX converter.
