About JXL files
The .JXL file is primarily a JPEG XL raster image, a royalty-free format developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group to outperform legacy JPG, PNG, and GIF files. You can read more about its architecture on Wikipedia. Additionally, a small subset of .JXL files are used by Trimble Inc as XML-based surveying job data files.
Despite its technical superiority, .JXL suffers from a severe lack of adoption. Major web browsers, notably Google Chrome, removed native support for the format. This means you cannot reliably upload or display .JXL files on standard websites. Sharing them with clients or non-technical users usually results in an 'unsupported file type' error, forcing you to find workarounds.
To fix compatibility issues, you must convert .JXL to widely supported formats. Converting to JPG or WEBP is highly recommended for web use, while PNG is ideal if you need to preserve lossless transparency. Note that converting to JPG will strip the advanced HDR (High Dynamic Range) data and animation frames inherent to the original .JXL file.
Opening or converting .JXL files locally is difficult because Windows and macOS lack out-of-the-box native support. Often, only specialized software like GIMP or the original Trimble surveying tools can properly read or export the data. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The JXL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JXL converter.
