About TGA files
The .TGA (Truevision Targa) file is a raster graphics format originally created for the first Truecolor display cards in the 1980s. While it remains a standard in the video game industry for storing uncompressed textures and sprite sheets with explicit Alpha Channels (transparency), it presents significant hurdles for general use.
Because .TGA files are often uncompressed or use simple RLE compression, they are significantly larger than modern alternatives, making them difficult to email or store efficiently. Furthermore, no web browser can display a .TGA file natively, and standard operating systems like Windows often fail to show thumbnails for them without third-party extensions. To use these images on websites, social media, or documents, users should convert them to PNG (to preserve transparency and reduce size), JPG (for maximum compression), or PDF (for archiving). Just drag and drop to determine the format, view, and convert it.

The TGA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TGA converter.
