To convert other file formats to the "Material Library" file type, you need software like SketchUp or a similar tool.
About SKM files
The .skm extension refers to two distinct file types, though it most commonly denotes a SketchUp Material file. These are actually ZIP archives renamed to .skm, containing a texture image (usually JPG or PNG) and XML metadata defining surface properties like opacity and scale. Designers use them to apply realistic finishes in SketchUp.
The problem users face is that standard image viewers and editors like Photoshop cannot open .skm files directly. To edit the texture or use it in other 3D software like Blender, you must convert it.
A secondary, less common use of .skm is for legacy mobile video files (associated with SK Telecom or Nexencoder). These outdated formats rarely play on modern smartphones or media players.
Conversion Targets:
For 3D/Design: Convert (extract) .skm to JPG or PNG to access the source texture.
For Video: Convert legacy .skm videos to MP4 for playback on any device.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SKM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The SKM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SKM converter.
