About IMAGE files
The .IMAGE file extension is a generic identifier used by multiple disparate systems, creating significant confusion for users due to its ambiguity. Historically, it served as a compressed application resource for the now-obsolete Symbian OS. Today, users most frequently encounter it in two distinct contexts: as a Disk Image file (used by Apple systems, Squeak Virtual Machines, FAT filesystems, or Cisco firmware) or as a "masked" standard graphic found in mobile application caches (such as TikTok).
The primary issue with .IMAGE files is the lack of a standard association; double-clicking often results in an "Unknown File Type" error because the operating system cannot distinguish between a mountable disk image, a proprietary industrial label design (created by Markem-Imaje CoLOS), or a simple picture. If the file is a disk image, it requires specific mounting software; if it is a cached asset, it is effectively a JPG or PNG locked inside a generic name.
For accessibility, converting these files to defined formats is the best solution. If the source is a graphic, convert to JPG, PNG, or WebP for immediate compatibility with web browsers and editors like Adobe Photoshop. If it is a disk image or firmware file, converting to ISO or IMG ensures compatibility with virtualization tools and archival software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IMAGE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IMAGE file to PDF, TEXT, JPG, PNG, ISO, IMG, DMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD or QCOW, you can use System-dependent / Apple Disk Utility or similar software from the "Disk Image or Graphic Container" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert VFD, DMG, OVA, IMA, VBOX, ADF, PVS, VHD, OVF, ISO, DSK or IMG files to IMAGE, try System-dependent / Apple Disk Utility or another comparable tool in the "Disk Image or Graphic Container" category.
The IMAGE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IMAGE converter.
