The .F3Z file is an assembly archive format used primarily by Autodesk Fusion 360. It packages a main 3D assembly design along with all its externally referenced component files into a single, compressed file. This structure allows engineers and designers to share complex, multi-part projects across different machines or with collaborators.
Opening and editing these files requires Autodesk Fusion 360 because the format relies heavily on Autodesk's proprietary cloud-based parametric modeling ecosystem. The major disadvantage of the .F3Z format is that it is fundamentally closed. Users cannot easily import an .F3Z file into competitor software like SolidWorks or Blender without losing the parametric assembly links. Additionally, users without an active, paid subscription often struggle to access their own archived projects offline.
To ensure cross-platform compatibility, users must convert these archives into universal CAD formats. The best conversion targets are STEP or IGES if you need to retain solid body geometry for engineering edits.
