About IWD files
The .IWD file extension is primarily associated with game archives developed by Infinity Ward for the Call of Duty franchise, specifically titles utilizing the id Tech 3 engine (like Call of Duty 2 and Modern Warfare). These files act as containers for game assets, including weapon scripts, texture images (JPEG, DDS), and audio files (WAV). While technically structured as standard ZIP archives, the proprietary .IWD extension prevents operating systems from automatically recognizing them as folders. This creates friction for gamers and modders attempting to access game data, as double-clicking usually results in an "Unknown File Type" error. To modify game files or extract assets for personal use, users must convert the container format. The most effective solution is converting or renaming the file to ZIP, which allows immediate access via Windows Explorer. For archival or compression efficiency, converting to 7Z using 7-Zip is recommended. A minor subset of these files may be legacy ID card projects from Datacard Preface, which require specific, often obsolete, software from Entrust.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IWD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted IWI, IDW, IWB, ZIP, WATCH, A3 and GXP files.
The IWD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IWD converter.
