About IPN files
A .IPN file is an Autodesk Inventor assembly presentation file. These files are typically used in mechanical engineering to store exploded views, animations, and step-by-step assembly instructions derived from complex 3D models. They are natively created, opened, and managed using Autodesk Inventor Professional.
The main disadvantage of the .IPN format is its heavily proprietary nature and dependency architecture. An .IPN file does not contain actual 3D geometry. Instead, it only holds references to external IAM (Assembly) and IPT (Part) files. If you share a .IPN file without the linked reference files, the recipient cannot view the presentation. Furthermore, viewing these files usually requires an expensive Autodesk subscription, creating a significant barrier for non-engineers, clients, or manufacturers who need to see the assembly instructions.
To share these instructions with external parties, users typically need to convert .IPN files to highly accessible targets. Static exploded views are best converted to PDF or DWF, while animated assembly instructions should be exported as MP4 or AVI video files. Note that converting to a video format permanently loses the interactive 3D rotation capabilities.
This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert outside of its native ecosystem. Because .IPN is a closed, proprietary format based on the Microsoft Compound structure, standard online converters fail to process it. Usually, only the original software can properly read the file, locate the referenced 3D assembly data, and export it. However, you can just drag and drop your file to convert.guru to identify the format, inspect the underlying file structure, and show any available text or internal content. If our analysis detects an embedded preview or a supported underlying format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your IPN file.
If you want to convert IPN file to DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT, X_T or X_B, you can use Autodesk Inventor or similar software from the "3D Assembly Presentation" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to IPN, try Autodesk Inventor or another comparable tool in the "3D Assembly Presentation" category.
The IPN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IPN converter.
