The .ice file extension represents a collision of several distinct formats, creating confusion for users trying to open them. Most commonly, it serves as a project file for Icestudio, an open-source visual editor for FPGA digital circuit design. These files store logic block layouts and connections in a JSON structure. While powerful for hardware design, they are useless without Icestudio installed and cannot be viewed in standard image or text editors.
Alternatively, a .ice file may be a legacy ICE Archive created by ICEOWS (formerly ICE). These archives were known for high compression ratios in the late 90s/early 2000s but are now obsolete and unsupported by modern operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS default tools.
