Convert IO to another file type
To convert your IO file to another format, you need BrickLink Studio or other 3D software.
Convert a file to IO
To convert other file formats to the "Virtual Construction CAD" file type, you need software like BrickLink Studio or a similar tool.
About IO files
The .IO file extension is primarily associated with BrickLink Studio, a comprehensive 3D modeling tool used to design virtual LEGO builds. These files function as compressed archives (internally ZIP format) that contain XML data describing the placement, color, and type of every brick in a scene, along with any custom assets or photorealistic rendering settings. While highly efficient for the LEGO ecosystem, .IO files present significant compatibility challenges outside of BrickLink Studio. They cannot be opened natively by standard 3D software like Blender or AutoCAD, and they require the proprietary environment to view or edit the model.
Users frequently need to convert .IO files to overcome this vendor lock-in. For 3D printing enthusiasts looking to bring digital creations to life, converting to STL or OBJ is essential. For graphic designers and animators, exporting to DAE (Collada) or POV (POV-Ray) allows for high-end rendering in third-party engines. Additionally, sharing a build with non-technical users often requires conversion to PDF for building instructions or PNG for visual previews. A secondary, less common use of the .IO extension involves diagram files created by diagrams.net (formerly draw.io), which require conversion to PDF, SVG, or JPG for web publishing and document embedding.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IO file to PDF, JPG, MP3, PNG, SVG, INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML or YAML, you can use BrickLink Studio or similar software from the "3D LEGO Model" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to IO, try BrickLink Studio or another comparable tool in the "3D LEGO Model" category.
The IO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IO converter.
