About IO files

The .io file extension typically represents a Digital LEGO Model created by BrickLink Studio. These files store 3D layouts, brick types, and connection points for virtual LEGO builds. The extension is also frequently used for flowchart diagrams saved from diagrams.net (formerly draw.io), and occasionally for complete webpage archives (MHTML) or app configuration scripts.

The primary disadvantage of the .io format in the context of 3D modeling is that it is heavily application-specific. Users cannot open a BrickLink Studio .io file in standard 3D viewers or web browsers because it relies on a proprietary local parts library. Sharing a build with someone who lacks the software means they simply cannot see the model. You must rely on the original application to generate viewable instructions or renders.

If you need to share these files, conversion is highly recommended. For BrickLink Studio files, the best target formats are PDF (for step-by-step instructions), PNG (for 3D renders), or OBJ and .COLLADA (.DAE) (for importing into standard 3D software like Blender). For draw.io diagrams, you should export to SVG, PDF, or PNG. Be aware that when converting to static images or PDFs, you lose all 3D data and structural editability.

Because the .io extension is shared among totally different applications, standard online converters often fail completely. A flowchart converter will crash if you upload a LEGO model. Furthermore, BrickLink .io files are closed, proprietary ZIP containers holding XML data. Often, only the original software can properly map the XML to visual 3D parts.

Convert.Guru analyzes your IO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DRAWIO, LXF, MANIAC WEBSITE, STUDIO, LDR, PNG, AI, ZIP, TXT, OPENCERT, INO, PDF and MP3 files.

FAQ

If you want to convert IO file to PDF, JPG, MP3, PNG, SVG, INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML or YAML, you can use BrickLink Studio or similar software from the "3D LEGO Model Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to IO, try BrickLink Studio or another comparable tool in the "3D LEGO Model Storage" category.

The IO Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IO converter.
