The .ios file extension does not belong to a standard Apple app or firmware update (which use IPA and IPSW). Instead, it is predominantly a GameMaker iOS App Data File generated by the GameMaker engine. It functions as a compiled archive holding game assets - such as sprites, background graphics, sound files, and logic scripts - packaged specifically for execution on Apple devices via an Objective-C runner. In rarer hardware engineering cases, it can also act as a binary logger file generated by HEM Data's J1939 Mini Logger systems.

The primary disadvantage of this format is its proprietary, closed-binary nature.
