About HEC files

A .HEC file can function as one of three distinct data types: a Fenecon Energy Management System (FEMS) driver package, a High Efficiency Image File (part of the MPEG standard), or a legacy 3D model archive used by video games like Homeworld 2 and Haegemonia: Legions of Iron. The Fenecon variant is utilized internally by industrial energy hardware to update system drivers. The image variant acts as a highly compressed multimedia container, while the game data variant stores proprietary 3D meshes for older Relic Entertainment game engines.

Working with .HEC files presents multiple real-world frustrations. The Fenecon driver is a closed, proprietary package meant only for specific hardware controllers. The High Efficiency Image format suffers from poor native support on Windows and most older web browsers, often requiring paid extensions just to view the image. Meanwhile, the legacy game models are locked inside an obsolete, closed engine format from the early 2000s, making them completely unreadable to modern 3D design software like Blender or Autodesk Maya.

To bypass these limitations, users should convert the image variants to JPG or PNG for universal compatibility across all devices and web platforms. The Fenecon driver files are structurally standard ZIP archives; renaming the extension often allows you to extract the contents. For the game archives, community modding tools are required to extract standard OBJ or FBX meshes.

Standard online converters usually fail to process .HEC files because they cannot distinguish between an energy hardware driver, an image file, and a retro game asset. Just drag and drop your file to identify the exact format, view its internal structure, and convert it when possible. Since the underlying structures frequently rely on ZIP compression or MP4 containers, our analysis engine can often extract the embedded data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HEC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted HEIC, MOV, XLSX and JPG files.

The HEC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HEC converter.
