About HEC files
The .HEC extension is an ambiguous identifier shared by three distinct file types, creating frequent confusion for users trying to open them.
1. Fenecon FEMS Archive (Most Common): Approximately 18% of these files are system driver packages for Fenecon Energy Management Systems. While these are critical for system updates, they are technically just standard ZIP containers renamed with a proprietary extension. Users commonly have issues when trying to inspect the logs or drivers inside because the operating system does not recognize the extension.
2. High Efficiency Image File (HEIF): Some .HEC files are non-standard variants of the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File) format, based on the MPEG-4 standard. Like HEIC files found on iPhones, these offer superior compression but suffer from poor compatibility on Windows and web browsers. To view these, users must typically convert them to JPG or PNG.
3. Game 3D Model: Legacy PC games such as Haegemonia: Legions of Iron and Homeworld use .HEC to store 3D geometry and texture data. These are proprietary binary files locked to the game engine, making them impossible to open with standard 3D software like Blender without specialized community-made extraction tools.
Convert.Guru analyzes your HEC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert HEC file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use 7-Zip or similar software from the "System Driver Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to HEC, try 7-Zip or another comparable tool in the "System Driver Archive" category.
The HEC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HEC converter.
