About HEVC files
The .hevc file format contains raw video streams encoded with the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard, commonly known as H.265. Jointly developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and ITU-T VCEG, this format was designed to offer up to 50% better data compression than its predecessor, AVC (H.264), at identical visual quality. It is widely used to capture and store 4K and 8K resolution footage on modern smartphones, drones, and security cameras. You can play .hevc files using open-source tools like VLC media player or mpv.
Despite its technical efficiency, the .hevc format suffers from major real-world disadvantages. The most significant issue is its proprietary nature and complex, expensive patent licensing structure. Because of these licensing fees, native support in web browsers is notoriously fragmented; attempting to embed .hevc in standard HTML5 <video> tags often results in playback errors in browsers like Chrome and Firefox. Additionally, operating systems like Windows 10 and 11 do not include native decoders out of the box, forcing users to purchase codec extensions. Furthermore, the format requires massive computational power to decode. Editing .hevc files natively in non-linear editors (NLEs) like Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve frequently causes timeline lagging or dropped frames on machines lacking specialized hardware acceleration.
To resolve these issues, conversion is highly recommended. For maximum playback compatibility across older hardware and smart TVs, convert to MP4 (encoded with H.264). For royalty-free web deployment, convert to WebM (VP9) or MP4 (AV1). If you need smooth performance during video editing, convert your footage to visually lossless intermediate formats like ProRes or DNxHR. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing paid software codecs.

The HEVC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HEVC converter.
