About MEDIA files
The .MEDIA file extension primarily acts as a proprietary video recording container used by security cameras and digital video recorders, predominantly those manufactured by iCatch Inc. In secondary contexts, it is used as a media collection database for the Anki flashcard application (internally formatted as JSON) or as a data export file from Facebook (internally formatted as HTML).
The main disadvantage of the DVR variant is its heavily proprietary nature. Security camera manufacturers intentionally obfuscate video headers to prevent tampering and ensure security, resulting in files that standard media players like VLC simply cannot open. These files often lack standard multiplexing, require clunky Windows-only playback software provided by the manufacturer, and cannot be natively supported by web browsers.
Converting the video to standard MP4, AVI, or MKV is highly recommended for sharing with law enforcement or archiving, but usually requires the original DVR export tool. This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard online converters fail to parse the non-standard proprietary wrappers. Our platform inspects the raw file headers. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - such as a disguised MP4 from an iReader server, or standard JSON/HTML text from Anki or Facebook - viewing or conversion may still be possible without needing the original software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MEDIA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
