About H264 files
A .h264 file is a raw video stream encoded using the Advanced Video Coding (AVC) standard. These files are frequently extracted during video demuxing or generated directly by DVR systems and security cameras from manufacturers like Dahua Technology and Hikvision. You can open these raw streams with specialized software such as VLC media player.
Raw .h264 files present major usability problems because they lack a container format (like MP4 or MKV). This means they often do not have audio tracks, metadata, or proper timestamp indices. You cannot smoothly scrub or fast-forward through a raw .h264 file in most media players. Furthermore, they are not natively supported by standard web browsers, mobile phones, or smart TVs. Security camera footage in this format is notoriously difficult to share with law enforcement or insurance companies because default system players on Windows or macOS cannot open it.
To make this video usable, you need to convert or "mux" the stream into a standard container. For web use, mobile compatibility, and sharing, convert to MP4. For archiving with potential extra tracks, convert to MKV. For legacy system compatibility, convert to AVI. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser.
