About H64 files
A .h64 file is essentially a raw H.264 video elementary stream, typically extracted from Hikvision digital video recorders (DVRs) and network video recorders (NVRs). Unlike standard video files like MP4 or MOV, an H64 file lacks a "container" - the digital envelope that holds audio and video together and provides crucial playback information like frame rate, duration, and timestamps.
Because of this raw format, most standard media players (including Windows Media Player and QuickTime) will fail to open the file, treating it as unrecognized data. Users often encounter this format when backing up surveillance footage to a USB drive, only to find the files unplayable on other devices. While the proprietary VSPlayer or the versatile VLC media player can often play these streams, they offer limited editing capabilities and poor compatibility with mobile devices or web browsers.
To make the footage usable for sharing, legal evidence, or archiving, the best approach is to convert the .h64 stream into a standardized container. Converting to MP4 (H.264/AAC) is the gold standard for compatibility across web, mobile, and desktop platforms. For professional editing in software like Adobe Premiere Pro, converting to an intermediate format like ProRes or a standard MOV is recommended to ensure the timeline can properly interpret the video's timing.
