About MAKERBOT files
A .makerbot file is a 3D printer toolpath archive created specifically for MakerBot 3D printers. It contains the precise sliced instructions, such as layer height, extruder paths, and temperature settings, required by the machine to physically print an object. These files are typically generated using MakerBot Print software.
Because the .makerbot format is a proprietary machine-specific container, users often encounter severe limitations when trying to use these files outside the MakerBot ecosystem. The file consists of pre-calculated machine instructions rather than editable 3D geometry. It is impossible to open and edit the 3D model in standard CAD applications like Blender or AutoCAD. Users cannot easily tweak the design or change print parameters once the file is sliced.
Ideally, users want to convert a .makerbot file back to an editable 3D format like STL or OBJ, or cross-convert the toolpath to standard GCODE for non-MakerBot printers. Unfortunately, reversing a compiled toolpath into a clean solid 3D model is mathematically complex and usually results in a messy, unusable mesh with lost internal geometry.
This file format is difficult to open or convert precisely because it is a closed instruction set intended only for final hardware execution. Often, only the original MakerBot Print software can properly interpret the data. If our analysis detects a supported embedded format, such as a preview image or extractable metadata, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MAKERBOT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MAKERBOT file to STL, X3G, GCODE, OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB or C4D, you can use MakerBot Print or similar software from the "3D Printer Toolpath Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to MAKERBOT, try MakerBot Print or another comparable tool in the "3D Printer Toolpath Archive" category.
The MAKERBOT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MAKERBOT converter.
