The .GTS file extension primarily identifies a Gerber Top Solder Mask file, a critical component in the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) manufacturing process. These files adhere to the Gerber RS-274X standard and dictate where the protective green coating (solder mask) should be applied to the top layer of a circuit board to prevent short circuits.
While essential for fabrication, .GTS files are notoriously difficult to work with outside of professional engineering environments. Because they are specialized ASCII vector files, standard image viewers and web browsers cannot open them. This creates significant friction when sharing designs with clients, project managers, or mechanical engineers who do not have expensive licenses for software like Altium Designer or Autodesk Eagle. Furthermore, legacy .GTS files may lack modern metadata, making them hard to render correctly without specific aperture definitions.
To bridge this gap, the most practical workflow is converting .GTS files to more accessible formats. For design review and documentation, convert to PDF or SVG to ensure vector quality is maintained without requiring CAD software. For mechanical integration, converting to DXF allows the solder mask geometry to be imported into tools like AutoCAD. Note: A minority of .GTS files may be Unity asset bundles or MIDAS GTS geotechnical models; these are binary formats and completely incompatible with Gerber converters.
