About GTO files

The .GTO file extension most frequently identifies a Gerber Top Overlay file, a specific subset of the Gerber RS-274X standard used in Printed Circuit Board (PCB) manufacturing. This file acts as a digital stencil, telling manufacturing equipment where to print the "silkscreen" layer - the white text, component designators, and logos - on the top side of a board. While the underlying data is often ASCII text, it consists of coordinate instructions for photoplotters, making it impossible to interpret with standard text editors or image viewers. This creates a significant workflow bottleneck: mechanical engineers and project managers often cannot view the file to verify label placement without installing expensive EDA software like Altium Designer or Autodesk Eagle.

For documentation and review, the best workflow is converting .GTO to PDF, which renders the vector lines as a viewable document. For mechanical clearance checks (e.g., ensuring text isn't covered by a screw head), converting to DXF allows the layer to be imported into mechanical CAD tools.

Note: A secondary, unrelated use of this extension is for GTO+ files used by GTO+ Poker Solver. These contain game theory strategy trees and are proprietary binary files that generally cannot be converted, only opened within the original software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GTO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GBL, GTS, GTL, GBR, TXT, ZIP, SCHDOC, PCBDOC and PCB files.

The GTO Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GTO converter.
