About GBS files

The .GBS file extension is heavily fragmented, primarily representing either a Gerber Bottom Solder Mask file or a Game Boy Sound music file. In printed circuit board (PCB) design, the Gerber format (maintained by Ucamco) is the industry standard for transferring 2D bi-level images. A .GBS file specifically dictates where the green solder mask layer is applied on the bottom of the board to prevent electrical shorts. Alternatively, the .GBS format is used by retro gamers and musicians to store ripped audio sequences from the Nintendo Game Boy.

Users face significant challenges with both formats. A Gerber .GBS file is written in raw ASCII but is completely unreadable without specialized CAM software like Altium Designer or proprietary Gerber viewers. Sharing a single layer file is also prone to misalignment or versioning errors if not bundled correctly. Similarly, Game Boy Sound files are essentially raw Z80 machine code instructions, not standard audio waveforms. You cannot play a .GBS audio file in native operating system media players or modern web browsers without installing obscure plugins or emulators like Deflemask.

To overcome these limitations, conversion is highly recommended. For PCB workflows, combine your .GBS with other layers and convert them to a unified PDF for print and client review, or export to SVG for web-based visual inspection. For chiptune audio, convert your .GBS to WAV or FLAC for lossless editing in digital audio workstations, or to MP3 and OGG for broad web playback. The GBS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GBS converter.
