About GBS files
The .GBS file extension represents a classic file format collision, serving two distinct, unrelated communities: electronics engineers and retro-gaming audiophiles.
Most commonly, a .GBS file is a Gerber Bottom Solder Mask file. This is a vector-based manufacturing file governed by the Gerber standard (maintained by Ucamco). It tells PCB fabrication machinery exactly where to apply the protective solder mask layer on the bottom of a circuit board. These files are exported from EDA software like Altium Designer, Eagle, or KiCad. The real problem for engineers is that .GBS files are not viewable by standard image viewers or browsers. To share a design with a client or manager who lacks CAD software, you must convert the .GBS layer to a universally accessible format like PDF, PNG, or SVG for visual verification.
Alternatively, .GBS stands for Game Boy Sound. These are chiptune audio files ripped directly from Nintendo Game Boy ROMs. Unlike MP3 or WAV files, which store recorded waveforms, a .GBS file contains the raw data and instructions for the Game Boy's sound hardware (APU). Consequently, standard media players (iTunes, Spotify, Windows Media Player) cannot play them. Users are effectively locked out of their music unless they install niche emulator plugins for foobar2000 or Winamp. To make these nostalgic tracks portable for smartphones or modern editing projects, users frequently need to render and convert the emulated audio into standard MP3 or WAV formats.

The GBS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GBS converter.
