Extract text from Gerber bottom layers (GBL)

A .gbl file primarily stores vector-based 2D design data for the bottom copper layer of a Printed Circuit Board (PCB). It utilizes the standard Gerber format (specifically RS-274X), which is the de facto industry standard originally developed by Ucamco. Electronics engineers generate these files using Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software like Altium Designer or Autodesk EAGLE to send final board designs to manufacturing facilities. Less commonly, a .gbl file acts as a Gecko Bootloader firmware update for Silicon Labs microcontrollers, or as a global settings backup for Korg and Yamaha digital keyboards.
The main disadvantage of the Gerber .gbl format is its highly specialized nature. Although it is plain ASCII text containing coordinate data, it cannot be rendered by standard operating systems, image viewers, or web browsers without dedicated CAD software or a specialized Gerber viewer. Sending a raw .gbl file to a non-engineer usually results in immediate confusion and requests for standard image screenshots.
To review PCB designs outside of a heavy EDA environment, you must convert the file. Convert to PDF for easy sharing, archiving, and printing across any device. Convert to SVG for web-based presentations or scalable vector editing in Adobe Illustrator. Convert to DXF if you need to import the precise layer geometry into mechanical CAD software like AutoCAD.
