To convert other file formats to the "Military Technical Graphic" file type, you need software like XnView or a similar tool.
About CALS files
A .CALS file is a legacy monochrome raster image format. It was created by the US Department of Defense as part of the Continuous Acquisition and Life-cycle Support initiative. Military contractors and engineers used it to store digitized blueprints, technical drawings, and documentation. Today, you can open these files using dedicated image viewers like IrfanView or XnView.
The biggest disadvantage of the .CALS format is its lack of modern compatibility. The files are strictly 1-bit, meaning they only support black and white pixels. Modern operating systems cannot generate thumbnails for them. Web browsers cannot display them natively. Furthermore, modern graphic design software often requires outdated plugins just to recognize the file header. This makes sharing .CALS files with non-technical clients incredibly frustrating.
To safely share and use these technical drawings, you must convert them. For web compatibility and general viewing, convert to PNG. This lossless format perfectly preserves the sharp black-and-white lines without blurring. For archiving and document distribution, convert to PDF. If you need to import the graphic into CAD software, convert to a high-resolution TIFF. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

The CALS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CALS converter.
