About GIM files

The .GIM file format is primarily a proprietary graphics container used in Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) software. These files function as the standard texture format for PSP games, storing sprites, backgrounds, and UI elements. Unlike standard images, .GIM files are optimized for the PSP's handheld GPU, often utilizing specific pixel formats like RGBA4444, RGBA5551, or indexed color (CLUT) which makes them unreadable by standard photo viewers like Microsoft Photos or Apple Preview.

Users typically encounter these files when extracting assets from game ISOs for modding, translation projects, or texture archiving. The primary difficulty is that .GIM data is often "swizzled" - the pixels are reordered for memory efficiency on the console - meaning even if you force-open them as raw data, they appear scrambled. To view or edit these textures, you must convert them to standard formats. For editing textures to re-insert into a game, converting to PNG or TGA preserves the alpha channel transparency best. For simple viewing, JPG is sufficient. Specialized tools like Noesis or GimConv are often required for the reverse conversion process.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GIM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted XCF, PNG, ISO, JPG, HEIC, PMF, BIN, AT3, SDOCX, AVIF and SCM files.
