About SCM files

The .SCM file extension is highly fragmented and serves multiple distinct purposes depending on the software that created it. Most commonly, it is a Samsung TV Channel List. Users export these files from their Samsung Smart TVs to a USB drive to edit channel orders on a PC using software like ChanSort. Internally, this specific .SCM file is just a standard ZIP archive containing XML or database files.

Another widespread use is for Grand Theft Auto (GTA) Compiled Scripts created for games like GTA: San Andreas. Modders use tools like Sanny Builder or CLEO to compile and decompile these files. Additionally, .SCM files are used as Scheme Source Code for the Scheme programming language, StarCraft Game Maps by Blizzard Entertainment, and legacy screen recordings by TechSmith Camtasia.

Users often need to convert or open .SCM files because they are completely unreadable without the specific software that generated them. For example, a GTA script is compiled bytecode, and a Camtasia screen recording requires outdated proprietary codecs. A Samsung channel list cannot be edited directly in a standard text editor without unzipping it first. This severe lack of standardisation means standard online converters usually fail.

If your .SCM file is a Samsung channel list, the best workaround is to rename the extension to ZIP and extract the contents to access the internal XML or CSV files. If it is Scheme source code or a GIMP Script-Fu script, it can be viewed as plain text and saved as TXT or MD.

Because .SCM is a multi-use extension, it is difficult to open or convert without knowing its exact origin. Proprietary game maps or automotive diagnostic scanner files are strictly closed formats. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is, and if our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format like a ZIP archive or plain text, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
