About PMF files
The .PMF file extension is most famously known as a PlayStation Movie File used by the PlayStation Portable (PSP). Sony utilized this proprietary format to encode cinematic cutscenes and promotional videos within PSP games. However, the .PMF extension is highly fragmented. Beyond PSP videos, it is heavily used as a Published Map File created by ESRI ArcGIS Publisher, which locks interactive maps into a read-only state for ArcReader. It is also used as a Partition Image Backup File by disk management utilities like DiskGenius and Eassos, or as surveillance footage in Pergamum DVMS systems. This fragmentation makes handling .PMF files extremely frustrating. If you have a PSP video, you cannot simply open it in standard media players or web browsers. The file uses proprietary multiplexing headers that obscure the underlying MPEG-4 video data. If you have an ESRI map file, it is completely locked - you cannot edit the layers or access the raw spatial data without the original publisher project. Disk image variants require specific recovery software to mount, and SQLite surveillance variants are useless without the original DVR software. To make these files usable, you must convert them. For PSP videos, converting to MP4 or MKV is essential for playback on modern devices and web viewing. If you are dealing with ArcGIS published maps, converting the data back to SHP or exporting views to PDF is the only way to share the maps outside the ESRI ecosystem.
