About GC files

The .GC extension is a chameleon, most frequently serving as a G-code instruction file generated by LightBurn for laser engravers and CNC machines. Unlike a standard image file, a .GC file contains plain text coordinates and power commands (e.g., G1 X10 Y10 S255) that tell a machine how to move. The primary difficulty here is that .GC files are output files, not source files; they lack the editable vector layers found in the original LBRN or .LBRN2 project files. You cannot simply 'convert' a .GC file back to a high-quality DXF or SVG without significant interpretation errors, making them poor choices for archiving designs.

For data architects, a .GC file might instead be an OASIS Genericode file - a verbose XML format used to define code lists (like country codes or currency identifiers). While standardized, these are notoriously difficult to read or manipulate in their raw form. Converting these to JSON, CSV, or Excel is essential for importing the data into modern databases or web applications. Lastly, legacy users may encounter .GC files created by Broderbund Greeting Card Factory. These are proprietary binary project files that modern software cannot render. The pragmatic solution for these is to reinstall the original software (if possible) and 'print' the design to PDF or JPG for preservation, as direct conversion tools do not exist.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GCODE, LBRN2, JPG, PNG, ECP, LBRN, SC and EC files.

FAQ

If you want to convert GC file to SC, EC, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF or DAT, you can use LightBurn or similar software from the "Laser Engraver G-Code" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to GC, try LightBurn or another comparable tool in the "Laser Engraver G-Code" category.

The GC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GC converter.
