About ECP files

The .ecp extension is shared by several completely distinct software ecosystems, making it a notoriously confusing file format. Most frequently, it functions as a Ukrainian digitally signed document (utilizing an internal certificate2 format) managed by state services like Diia or NAIS platforms to verify electronic identities. Alternatively, it is a laser engraver job file used by Epilog Laser and LightBurn, which stores compiled machine instructions inside a proprietary Microsoft Compound container. Other highly technical applications include WAGO e!COCKPIT PLC automation files (stored as ZIP archives), electronic catalog orders (JSON), KROS Cenkros construction budgets (XML), and network packet capture logs from Ettercap.

These diverse formats are united by one major disadvantage: they are highly specialized, proprietary, and useless outside their parent software.
